Santa lives at the North Pole, the story says, in a snowy village with a toy workshop, a reindeer stable and Mrs. Claus's warm kitchen. The earliest known picture of his home there is an 1866 drawing by the cartoonist Thomas Nast. Tap any pin on the map below to step inside a corner of the village.

In the stories, Santa lives at the North Pole, the snowy top of the world, with Mrs. Claus, the elves and the reindeer. The idea is younger than Santa himself. It first shows up in pictures in the 1860s.
The earliest known one ran on December 29, 1866, when Harper's Weekly printed Thomas Nast's drawing "Santa Claus and His Works." A caption on its border reads "Santa Claussville, N.P." The N.P. stands for North Pole. Nast drew 33 Christmas pictures for the magazine between 1863 and 1886, and the Delaware Art Museum calls them the first known references to Santa living at the North Pole and keeping a toy workshop.
Nobody knows for sure why he picked the Pole, or if the idea was even his. The reasons usually given: Arctic explorers had been in the news since the 1840s, the far north meant snow, and no country owned it, so Santa could stay neutral and visit everyone. The North Pole address stuck.
Yes. The North Pole is the spot at 90 degrees north where every line of longitude meets, but there is no land there. It sits on sea ice about 2 to 3 meters (7 to 10 feet) thick, floating on the Arctic Ocean. In 2007 a Russian Mir submersible measured the seafloor 4,261 meters (13,980 feet) below. The ice drifts all the time, so anything built on it drifts too. The nearest land, Kaffeklubben Island off Greenland, is about 700 km (430 miles) away.
The Pole has no time zone of its own, so visitors pick one. The sun is up the whole time from about the March equinox to the September equinox, then stays below the horizon for the other half of the year. That means on Christmas Day the sun never rises at the North Pole. Even summer is chilly: June to August averages around freezing.
In American stories, yes, and he has since Nast's 1866 drawing. On the map above, his home is the log cottage next to the toy workshop. Mrs. Claus keeps the kitchen there, and the reindeer sleep in the stable across the path. A house on the real Pole would drift away with the sea ice. In the story, the village stays put, right where the elves drew it.
Other countries tell it their own way. In Finland, Santa lives on Korvatunturi, a fell on the border with Russia whose name means "Ear Fell." A children's radio host, Markus Rautio, told listeners so in 1927. Danish children say he lives near Uummannaq in Greenland, and in Sweden he has a home at Tomteland, outside Mora. In the Dutch tradition, Sinterklaas lives in Spain and arrives by steamboat every November. Canada Post even gives the North Pole its own postal code; the letter-writing guide has Santa's full mailing address.
Calls itself the Official Hometown of Santa Claus. Its Santa Claus Village sits at the Arctic Circle, about 8 km (5 miles) from the city center and roughly 1,600 miles south of the Pole. Mail sent from Santa's post office there gets a special postmark.
A small city near Fairbanks, incorporated in 1953, with 2,243 people at the 2020 census. The street lights are striped like candy canes, and roads include Santa Claus Lane and St. Nicholas Drive. It is about 1,700 miles south of the real Pole.
Not a town but a fell in eastern Lapland, on the Finland and Russia border. Finnish stories say Santa's secret workshop is hidden here, and the story keeps its exact spot a secret.
A town on a small island in North Greenland, named for its heart-shaped mountain. A 1989 Danish TV Christmas show, Nissebanden i Grønland, made it Santa's home, and children in Denmark and Greenland believe he lives here. The show's little stone-and-turf cabin stands a hike outside town, and a big red post box behind the church takes Santa's mail.
In Sweden, Santa has a home at Tomteland (Santaworld), a theme park in the forest at the foot of Gesunda Mountain, just south of Mora. It opened on December 8, 1984. Santa's house shares the woods with an elf village and a troll kingdom, and the park is featured in the music video for Shakin' Stevens's 1985 hit "Merry Christmas Everyone."
If you count from St. Nicholas, Santa is about 1,750 years old in 2026. Nicholas was a bishop of Myra, a town in what is now southern Turkey. Tradition says he was born around 270 AD in nearby Patara and died on December 6, around 343. He was known for giving gifts in secret, and his feast day, December 6, is still a gift day in parts of Europe.
The Santa Claus most people picture is much younger. His name comes from Sinterklaas, the Dutch name for St. Nicholas, and he took his shape in New York in the 1800s. The poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas," printed in 1823, put him in a sleigh pulled by eight tiny reindeer, each with a name, and sent him down the chimney. Thomas Nast's drawings, starting in 1863, turned those words into pictures and gave him the North Pole home. Counted from the poem, this Santa is 203 years old, and he looks good for it.

Santa's workshop is the red building at the top of the village map, where elves build toys all year. Thomas Nast drew the first known picture of it in the 1860s. Later stories filled it with a crew of elves.
The story goes like this. Letters arrive at the post office and get sorted by elves. The Nice List is checked twice in its tower. Wishes go to the workshop floor, where each toy is built, painted and tested. Finished toys get wrapped and packed into sacks by the sleigh, and on Christmas Eve the reindeer pull the whole load around the world in one night. The busiest week is the one before Christmas, when the elves work late and Mrs. Claus sends cocoa over from the cottage.
Every elf on the floor has a name. Find out what yours would be, then make the wish list the elves will build from.
This is how the elves tell it. Times are North Pole time, which is whatever time the elves say it is.
The reindeer get breakfast and a brushing in the stable. Dasher and the team stretch their legs in the pen.
Mail sacks reach the post office. Elves read every letter and pin the wishes to the big board. Write one for the next sack.
The workshop bell rings. Saws buzz, paint dries, and the first toys of the day roll down the belt.
An elf climbs the tower to check the Nice List. See whose names are on it.
Lunch in Mrs. Claus's kitchen: soup, warm bread and a cookie test for every elf.
The candy cane harvest. Elves pick the ripest stripes from the forest, the story goes.
Skating on the pond. One more mark in the ice means one fewer sleep until Christmas.
Santa takes calls. Kids and grown-ups talk to him live on video and tell him what they are hoping for.
The bell on the Pole rings once. Lanterns go out, and the whole village goes to sleep.

Many children in Denmark and Greenland say yes. A 1989 Danish TV Christmas show, Nissebanden i Grønland, put Santa's home near Uummannaq, a town on a small island in North Greenland. A little stone-and-turf cabin from the show still stands outside town, and a big red post box behind the church takes Santa's mail. In American stories, he lives at the North Pole.
The real Pole is drifting sea ice far from any town, so there is no village to walk into. You can visit the places that claim Santa: Rovaniemi in Finland, North Pole in Alaska, Uummannaq in Greenland and Tomteland near Mora, Sweden. Or skip the trip and talk to Santa on a live video call from home.
No time zone is assigned to the North Pole, because every time zone meets there. Expeditions use whatever is handy, such as the time back home or Greenwich Mean Time. In the stories, the elves keep their own.
