Santa Claus

Workshop & Toy Office · The North Pole

North Pole · December 1, 2026

Dear Maya,

Greetings from the North Pole! The elves are hammering away in the workshop, Mrs. Claus has cookies in the oven, and I finally found a quiet minute to write to you.

My elves keep careful notes, and the notes about you made me proud. This year you learned to ride a bike without training wheels. You also helped your little brother with his reading. That's the kind of thing that makes the whole workshop cheer.

I also heard you're hoping for a set of watercolor paints. The elves have written it down in the big book, and we'll see what the sleigh can carry.

Keep being kind, keep being curious, and get a good night's sleep on Christmas Eve. The reindeer and I will be very busy that night!

Love,

SantaSC

P.S. Comet asked me to tell you that carrots are still the best snack.

Nothing you type leaves this device. You print the letter and deliver it yourself; nothing is mailed.

How do you get a free letter from Santa?

There are two kinds: a letter you make and a letter the elves write. The quickest is the writer above. Add your child's name and two real things from their year, print it on one page, and leave it where they'll find it: in the mailbox, on the breakfast table or under the tree. It costs only paper and ink.

If you'd like a reply to come by mail, your child can write to a post office that answers. Canada Post says Santa replies to every letter sent to Santa Claus, North Pole, H0H 0H0, and no stamp is needed inside Canada. In Santa Claus, Indiana, volunteers called Santa's Elves answer letters sent to P.O. Box 1. The U.S. Postal Service offers a third route: you write Santa's reply, and it arrives with a North Pole postmark. The table shows the 2026 dates posted so far.

How do you get a North Pole postmark on a letter from Santa?

The Postal Service runs a simple service for parents. You write Santa's reply, and the post office in Anchorage, Alaska mails it back to your child with a North Pole postmark. Here's how USPS describes it:

  1. Print Santa's letter here. If your child wrote to Santa, keep their letter too.
  2. Put both in an envelope addressed to your child. Write SANTA, NORTH POLE as the return address and add a First-Class stamp.
  3. Put that envelope inside a larger one, with postage, addressed to NORTH POLE POSTMARK, POSTMASTER, 4141 POSTMARK DR, ANCHORAGE AK 99530-9998.
  4. Mail it between November 23 and December 1, the window USPS suggests.

The USPS page gives no year for those dates, so check it again in November. USPS also suggests highlighting your child's accomplishments, which is what the two good-thing lines in the writer are for.

Does Santa Claus, Indiana write back?

Yes. The town's letter replies go back to 1914, when postmaster James Martin began answering some of the letters addressed to Santa. Today a group of volunteers called Santa's Elves answers the thousands of children's letters that arrive every year, according to the Santa Claus Museum & Village.

Your child writes to Santa Claus, P.O. Box 1, Santa Claus, IN 47579, with a full, readable return address, because that's where the reply goes. Mail it in early December so the elves have time to answer before Christmas, and check the town's page for this year's date. Visiting? You can sit in the original Santa Claus post office at the museum and write a letter for free, and the elves write back in December. The town's working post office, in the Kringle Place shopping center, also has a picture postmark each December that you can put on a letter you write yourself.

What should a letter from Santa say?

Keep it to one page and make it about your child, not about presents. A good letter from Santa has six parts, and the writer above builds all of them:

  • A greeting with their name, and one line about life at the North Pole.
  • Two real, specific things they did this year. "You helped your brother read" beats "you were good."
  • Their wish, mentioned without a promise, so nothing is spoiled if plans change.
  • A kind send-off, like a reminder to sleep on Christmas Eve.
  • A signature, in red if you sign by hand.
  • A reindeer P.S., so the letter ends on a giggle.

Match the voice to the age. Little ones like short sentences and a "Ho, ho, ho!" Older kids and teens want it sincere. Skip threats: a letter from Santa is no place for a naughty list. Our Nice List checker never puts anyone on one.

How Santa's opening changes with age

  • Ages 3 to 5Ho, ho, ho! It's Santa, writing to you from my workshop at the North Pole. The snow is deep, the elves are busy, and I've been thinking about you.
  • Ages 6 to 8Greetings from the North Pole! The elves are hammering away in the workshop, Mrs. Claus has cookies in the oven, and I finally found a quiet minute to write to you.
  • Ages 9 to 12Greetings from the North Pole, where the snow is deep and the workshop lights stay on late. I wanted to step away from the toy lists for a moment and write to you myself.
  • For a teenGreetings from the North Pole. I know you might feel a bit old for letters from me, but the elves insisted, and I happen to agree with them.
  • For a grown-upGreetings from the North Pole. Grown-ups don't get nearly enough letters from me, so this year I'm putting that right.

How do you make a letter from Santa feel real?

The words matter most, but a few touches help a letter from Santa feel like it came a long way:

  • Print on thick cream or off-white paper. Card stock holds a fold well.
  • Sign "Santa" by hand in red ink, in handwriting that isn't yours. Or leave the printed signature.
  • Roll it into a scroll tied with ribbon, or fold it into an envelope addressed in big, curly letters.
  • Pick the moment: in the mailbox on December 1, beside the cookie plate on Christmas morning, or tucked into a stocking.
  • Send it by mail with a North Pole or Santa Claus, Indiana postmark, using the steps above.

A letter can start a conversation. If your child writes back, the letter to Santa template gives them a page to fill in. For a quick hello between letters, make a text from Santa picture, and the Christmas wish list keeps their ideas in one place. More North Pole fun is on the North Pole page.

Can Santa answer your child out loud?

A letter is lovely, but it can't answer a follow-up question. If your child wants to ask how the reindeer stay warm, or tell Santa about their year in their own words, try a call. You can talk to Santa on a live video call right in your browser. Santa here is an AI video character: he listens and answers out loud, live, on a phone, tablet or computer, with no app. You need a microphone, not a camera. Kids call with a grown-up, and grown-ups can call for themselves. After the call, every wish comes back as a wish list with real store prices and links, lowest first. It's $1 a minute, for as many minutes as you like, and the video is saved only if a grown-up asks. Here's how a call with Santa works.

Letter from Santa questions

Is the letter from Santa really free?

Yes. There's no sign-up and no email. Fill it in, then print it or save the PNG. Only mailing it costs anything, and that's normal postage.

Will it print on A4 paper?

Yes. The letter is sized for US Letter and shrinks to fit A4 on one page. If your printer adds a blank second page, set the scale to "Fit to page."

Does Santa promise the gift my child wished for?

No. The wish line says the elves made a note of it, in words that change with your child's age. It never promises the gift, so nothing is spoiled if plans change.

Can I change the words?

You choose the name, age, two good things, the wish, the reindeer P.S., the sign-off and the date line. For fully custom words, print the blank letterhead and write your own.

When should my child get the letter?

Any time in December works. The date line can show today's date, December 1 or Christmas Eve, so you can print it early and have it match the day it arrives.

Is anything I type saved?

Only in this browser, so you can come back and finish. Nothing is sent to Frugal Santa or anyone else. Tap "Start over" to clear it.
