What Christmas gift ideas work for almost anyone?

The safest gifts are things people use up or use every day, picked a notch nicer than they would buy for themselves. A box of snacks, a cozy throw, a book light or a game for the whole table rarely ends up in a drawer. Experiences work for almost anyone too: tickets, a class or dinner out take up no room and give you a day together.

Gift cards were the top wish in the National Retail Federation's 2025 survey: 50% of adults said they would like one. Name a store or restaurant the person already goes to, so it feels chosen for them.

When you don't know someone well, skip anything with a size, a scent or a strong style. The 16 ideas below follow that rule and come in three budgets. Star the ones you like and print the list for the shops.

How much do people spend on Christmas gifts?

The National Retail Federation asked 8,247 US adults from October 1 to 7, 2025, what they planned to spend on the holidays. The average was $890.49 a person, with $627.93 of it on gifts for family and friends. The other $262.56 was for seasonal items like food or candy, decorations and greeting cards. That total was the second highest in the survey's history, just under the record $901.99 of the year before.

Gallup asks people how much they expect to spend on Christmas or holiday gifts. In October 2025 the average answer was $1,007. By its poll of November 3 to 25, it had fallen to $778, a drop of $229, the largest midseason drop Gallup has recorded.

The two surveys ask different questions, so their numbers differ. Use them as a check on your own plan, not a target to hit.

How do you find out what someone wants for Christmas?

Ask early and ask in writing. Ask family to make a Christmas wish list with sizes, links and prices, then send you the link. For an office or a group of friends, a Secret Santa questionnaire collects favorite colors, snacks and hobbies in one go.

Or let Santa ask. With Santa's interview, you send a link to the grown-ups on your list. Each one has a short video call with Santa, an AI video character, who chats about their year, what they love lately, what they'd rather not get and what they wish for. Santa tells each guest at the start that he shares their wishes with you, and they tick a box saying so.

Afterwards you see, under each name, a short summary, their likes and dislikes, and their wishes with store prices. Your minutes pay, at $1 a minute, and a call only uses the time they talk. Kids tell Santa their wishes on your own call.

How can you keep Christmas gift costs down?

Set one total before December and split it by person. Then compare the same item at a few stores before you buy, with shipping and tax added in, since free shipping can beat a lower sticker price. Santa's wish list does the comparing for you. After a live video call with Santa, each wish comes back priced across stores, lowest first, with links.

Keep receipts. Target, for one, takes price-match requests up to 14 days after purchase. You can buy gift cards early, too: under federal rules, the money can't expire for at least five years from purchase or the last load.

Buy fewer gifts. Draw names with a Secret Santa generator so each person buys for one, or swap gifts by the white elephant rules with a price limit. Share one shortlist with anyone splitting a gift, so nobody doubles up.

Christmas gift questions

What is a good gift for someone you don't know well?

Something they can use up or enjoy right away: a cocoa set, a snack box, a book light or a gift card to a nearby restaurant. Skip sizes, scents and strong styles.

What are good Christmas gifts under $25?

Tap "Under $25" in the filter above for 6 ideas, then see our cheap Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers for more.

When should I start Christmas shopping?

Before December if you can. In the NRF's 2025 survey, 42% of shoppers planned to start before November.

What do you get someone who has everything?

Time and experiences usually beat more things. See our gift ideas for someone who has everything.

Can I give a call with Santa as a gift?

Yes. With gift minutes, you buy minutes for someone at $1 a minute, write a short note and get a gift card with a code to print, save as a picture or send as a link. Nothing to wrap or ship, and the minutes don't expire. Read how calling Santa works.

Is my shortlist saved?

It stays in this browser on this device, and nothing is sent to us. A shared link carries only the idea codes after the # sign, and browsers don't send that part to a website.
